Guadalupe Island
The season is nearly upon us… and now is the time to snag one of the limited number of spots
on expeditions to meet the ultimate predator - the Great White shark - face-to-face. The
"titans" of the shark world gather on an annual basis off the desolate island of Guadalupe,
about 150 miles off the coast of Baja, Mexico which has now been declared a "Biosphere
Reserve". It is being referred to by the world's best underwater photographers as the best
place in the world to get images of these large predators. The season runs from September
through November.
Expeditions are generally 5-night live-aboard trips which depart out of either San Diego or
Ensenada, Mexico (including land transfer from San Diego) and provide three full days of cage
time with comfortable accommodations, live-aboard amenities and all meals. Air to divers is
provided by a "hookah" system from on board so divers only need to provide masks and thermal
protection (wetsuits, booties, gloves, hoods, etc.). But don't forget your underwater camera(s)!
Live-aboards are equipped with camera tables, charging stations and surface viewing areas where
passengers can catch the action from above as well as below the surface as they rotate in and
out of the cages. To ensure safe practices and the well being of the marine environment, a
monitoring system is now also in place along with park regulations and a code of conduct. Cage
divers are now required to pay a $4 per day fee which is a small price to pay to help ensure
that these magnificent creatures are around in the seasons to come.
Rates start at $2,650 per person including live-aboard accommodations, cage diving and meals.
Bonaire
Colorful, unpretentious, and fun- the Divi Flamingo Beach Resort and Casino is the perfect
base for vacationers drawn to the sleepy island of Bonaire and world-class Caribbean scuba diving.
Spacious oceanfront and gardenview guestrooms and suites are gaily decorated in bright,
tropical colors. Private balconies invite guests to relax after a day of diving.
